Artur Rodzinski (1892-1958) is one of the most notorious, yet far too little known, central conductors and orchestral educators of the 20th century. Now, for the first time, on 16 carefully remastered CDs, are all the recordings the Polish conductor made with the New York Philharmonic, mainly between 1944 and 1946 at Carnegie Hall. These include: Brahms’ Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2, orchestral pieces and the “Pathetique” Symphony by Tchaikovsky, French works by Bizet and Saint-Saëns (such as the Fourth Piano Concerto with Robert Casadesus), Sibelius’ Fourth and Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphonies, younger US composers such as Gershwin and Copland. And most impressively: Richard Wagner, such as the complete 3rd act of the “Walküre” with the legendary voices of Helen Traubel and Herbert Janssen. As a bonus, there are two CDs of recordings with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra. Rodzinski’s conducting style was modern in its straightforwardness, combined with razor-sharp articulation and breathing espressivo, undoubtedly worthy of rediscovery.
